POWERHOUSE DEVOTIONALS: BORING BUT BECOMING

By: Kim Rato

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin..." Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)

I once heard this from a motivational speaker,

“Discipline is boring. Hard work is boring. Studying is boring. Doing the same thing every day is boring. But boredom is the birthplace of success. So — be a boring person for the time being.”

This is true. In a world that craves excitement, we can easily overlook the basics. Daily discipline feels ordinary. Hard work feels repetitive. Staying consistent seems unimpressive — especially when everyone else is showing off their highlight reels.

Last Sunday’s message at church was about Zechariah 4:10 and it reminded me that it’s okay to be “boring.” When we think of success, we often imagine the big moments — the breakthrough, the promotion, the applause. But God reminds us in this verse that He rejoices in the small beginnings. The quiet, unseen, “boring” parts of our journey matter deeply to Him because they are where God does His finest work in us.

Every time you choose to pray instead of scroll, give your tithes instead of doubt, study the Bible instead of slack off, upskill instead of rant, show up instead of give up — heaven rejoices. These small acts are not just habits; they are acts of obedience. Obedience is “boring”, but it positions us to receive God’s promises. When we neglect the basics, we risk losing sight of what we’re truly called to do — and even miss out on what God has promised us.

That’s why we need to ask God for wisdom and strength to stay consistent and obedient. To trust that He is working through our faithfulness. To see the beauty in the small beginnings — because they are not just steps on the way to success, they are the very place where God is shaping us to handle what’s coming next, the very things that God uses to build something beautiful in our lives.

So yes, let’s embrace the “boring” things. Let’s choose the quiet disciplines, the daily faithfulness, and the humble beginnings.

Let’s be boring objectively, purposefully, and for the glory of God.

PRAYER:

Lord, thank You for rejoicing over my small beginnings. Help me not to despise the “boring” parts of my journey but to see them as moments where You are at work. Give me wisdom to stay consistent and strength to keep building, knowing that You are with me every step of the way. Amen.

REFLECTION:

  1. Have you ever seen God work through a ‘boring’ season in your life?

  2. Which daily routine or ‘small beginning’ do you struggle to stay consistent with?

  3. What distractions do you need to let go of so you can focus on what really matters?
