POWERHOUSE DEVOTIONALS: GET OUT OF EGYPT

By Justine Teves Blas

The new year arrived, and with it, I poured out my heart before the Lord, expressing my frustrations, disappointments, and unanswered questions. As I desperately sought clear direction for the things I had been praying about, God answered me with two simple words—"be still."

I was stunned. This was not the response I expected. How could stillness be the answer when my heart was so restless?

But then, God reminded me of the story of Israel’s escape from Egypt. The Israelites had been enslaved for 400 years, crying out for deliverance. But when God finally set them free, fear crept in. As Pharaoh’s army pursued them, they started to question God.

“They said to Moses, ‘Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?’” Exodus‬ ‭14‬:‭11‬ (NIV)‬‬

How often do we react the same way? We pray for a breakthrough, but when God leads us into the unknown, we doubt. We would rather go back to what is familiar than step out into what He offers.

Many of us find ourselves trapped in our own “Egypts”—our plans, control, fear, pride, or even unhealthy relationships and ambitions. We struggle to trust God’s timing and let these things hold us captive, leading to restlessness. Yet, in Exodus 14:14, God gives us a powerful reminder.

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”‭‭ Exodus‬ ‭14‬:‭14‬ (NIV)‬‬

Stillness is not inaction. It is surrender. It means trusting that even when we do not see a way ahead, God is already making one.

When God leads us out of our “Egypt,” He will surely not leave us stranded. Just as He parted the Red Sea for the Israelites, He will also make a way for us. All that is left to do is be still, believing that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Lord, help me to trust You even when I do not understand.

Give me the courage to leave behind anything that keeps me captive.

Teach me to be still and rest in Your promises, knowing that You are fighting for me.

Amen.
